History of Agnigarh

According to legend, the fortress was surrounded by fire (agni) to prevent entry, giving the hill its name. The site is linked to the story of Banasura's daughter Usha and Aniruddha, grandson of Lord Krishna, and the subsequent battle between Banasura and Krishna.
Culture & Context
The hill is culturally significant for its association with Hindu mythology and the Mahabharata/Puranic legends of Usha-Aniruddha. Sculptures and installations on the hill depict this love story, making it an important cultural landmark and symbol of Tezpur's identity as the historic Sonitpur.
