History of Adil Shah Palace
Originally built around 1500 by Yusuf Adil Shah of the Bijapur Sultanate as a palace and military outpost, it was captured by the Portuguese in 1510. It subsequently functioned as the official residence of Portuguese Viceroys until the mid-18th century when the viceregal seat moved to Old Goa and later back to Panjim. Post-liberation, it housed the Goa State Secretariat until administrative functions relocated.
Culture & Context
The palace symbolizes the transition of power from the Adil Shahi dynasty to Portuguese colonial rule in Goa. Its architectural evolution reflects centuries of cultural synthesis between Deccan Islamic traditions and European colonial aesthetics, making it a key monument in understanding Goa's layered history.
