History of Acland Street
Acland Street was laid out in the 19th century and named after Sir Thomas Dyke Acland. It developed as a commercial and residential street with the expansion of St Kilda as a seaside suburb in the 1880s. An electric tram service was introduced in the early 20th century. After World War II, European migrants, particularly from Poland and other parts of Europe, established cake shops and continental delicatessens that defined the street's character.
Culture & Context
Acland Street is culturally significant as Melbourne's best-known European cake-shop precinct and a symbol of post-war migrant contribution to Australian food culture. It remains a focal point for St Kilda's dining and entertainment culture and is closely associated with the adjacent Luna Park, Palais Theatre and St Kilda beachside leisure traditions.
