History of 1857 Memorial Museum
The Residency was constructed between 1780 and 1800 during the reign of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula to house the British Resident. The complex became the focal point of a prolonged siege in 1857 and retains ruins, cemeteries and memorials from that period. The 1857 Memorial Museum was established within one of the Residency buildings to preserve and display objects, images and records associated with the events of 1857 and the history of the Residency. The site is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
